The Queensland Government has increased funding for disadvantaged cohorts to participate in training through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. The initiative provides people facing significant barriers to participation with equitable access to training opportunities. The initiative is on track to meet its goal of helping 54,000 Queenslanders over six years (2015-16 to 2020-21) work. The provision of long-term contracts is not a common practice. To date, the commissions have approved 11 long-term contracts. The department considers these contracts to be ideal for contracts where specialized services have a limited number of suitable suppliers. The division limits the number of long-term contracts to ensure the availability of budgets for future funding cycles and to enable it to respond to emerging needs or government priorities at the national and local levels.
